Yamaha has always been known for its sportiness and dynamism and the R3 continues to uphold these traits. The racing R-series DNA is very much visible on the Yamaha R3 as it looks sharp and crisp. The front upper fairing gets a windscreen to protect the rider’s upper body from wind blast. The twin-headlamps bring out the aggressiveness in the R3, while the side fairing is crafted in a balanced way.
As the R3 is targeted for enthusiasts, Yamaha thought the best place to showcase its capability is at the Buddh International Circuit and we truly second this decision. After tasting success with the R15, a lot is riding on the R3 as many are looking at it as the next step to the world of big bikes. Press start the ignition button and the 321cc liquid-cool engine comes to life. Exhaust note is more on the subdued side, so it you want more pomp and rigour every time you start the bike then you will have to opt for an after market exhaust pipe. Twist the throttle and the power flow is responsive and linear. This 2-cylinder motorcycle is very refined and does not throw you back. In all respect, the R3 lets you get familiar with its capability and lets you be at ease rather than give you a crash course to pure unadulterated power. What was impressive was that without even pushing it hard, the R3 was coasting at 160km/h. The 6-speed transmission is very smooth and precise, which lets you get more out of the motorcycle.
Handling has been one of Yamaha’s forte, and like the R15, the R3, has a razor sharp chassis, which lets it sweep past turns without ever second guessing. It holds its line to the ‘T’ and does not meander. The rear suspension is slightly on the softer side, but then keeping in view of our road conditions, it helps in tackling potholes. R3 appears have a very aggressive riding stance, but once you sit on the bike you realise it is a lot more straighter and far more comfortable than we had anticipated. Some credit also goes to supportive seat.
Pricing is the key to any product and Yamaha has managed to get it spot on as it is available for Rs 3.25 lakhs, Ex-showroom, Delhi. It is cheaper than the Kawasaki Ninja 300, yet far more advanced when it comes to technology. It is also more powerful. There are a couple things we hope to see in the R3, even as option features. One is ABS and the other is slip clutch, which is a great boon while down shifting as it negates engine braking. The R3 is one bike many enthusiasts and die-hard fans will be lining up to buy.
